Best/Worst of 1999...
It is the time of year to harshly judge the year that just passed us by. I now have a venue to express my very biased opinions so I thought I'd give it a go. The categories are pretty arbitrary and just because I have a "best" listing doesn't mean that there is a "worst" listing - this was done pretty stream-of-consciousness style (I don't want to know what it has to say about my consciousness). I cannot provide the typical "10 Best/Worst Movies" ratings because I'd have to see a list of all the movies I saw last year. A year is a long time to have to remember stuff! So, here are the ratings already, Vertigogirl style...
Movies
Best movie: Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
I suppose it is a cheap pick but I loved it and I saw it 5 times and Liam Neeson rocked my world!
Best song from South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut: What would Brian Boitano do? (This could belong in the next category, but whatever.)
Best use of aversion therapy in a trailer to prevent me from seeing a movie:The Sixth Sense. That kid was so creepy! And the 20th time I heard "I see dead people" whispered in the theatre I wanted to scream out loud. "Talk in a normal voice you freaky little kid!" (Apparently this movie was actually really good. I may have to see it but the trailer sure made me not want to.)
Worst trailer for a movie that may actually be kind of cool:Titan A.E. It looks like a lame space movie, but it is actually animated. That may make it better, or it could just be a lame, animated space movie.
Music
Album that I liked the most from start to finish: Hole Celebrity Skin.
Song that I cannot resist dancing to no matter where I am: All-Star by Smash Mouth
Best musical group I discovered thanks to my brother James: Reel Big Fish
Best album sent by Columbia House because I didn't reply in time to the little card thingy: Soundtrack to the movie Go.
Worst album sent by Columbia House because I didn't reply on time to the little card thingy: Jewel - that one went back!
Habits/Hobbies
Best/Worst new vice: WWF wrestling
Best change in perception about me: From "Kate is the reason that Kate and Theo never want to go out" to "Kate is party-girl who will go dancing any time and stay up really late"
Best new hobby: This website, of course.
Best cuisine that I've decided is yummy after all: Sushi
Best "make my parents proud" moment: Singing solo (for the first time in many years) in my choir concert, backed by a baroque orchestra, in a cool cathedral with my parents in the 3rd row.
Best flavour of Jelly Belly jelly beans:Rootbeer
Clothes
Best addition to my wardrobe: My shiny, silver jacket (well, duh!)
Least comfortable shoes that look really comfortable:My green, Converse flip-flops. They look all padded and comfy, but they are pure evil to walk in. Like sandpaper rather than sandals. At least they got the sand part right...
Best thing ever to happen to my feet. Ever! I'm not kidding!:My Steve Madden "Fuzzies" leopard print slippers. (Yay, Annelise) They even feel okay on the blisters caused by the above entry.
Television
Best TV show that I didn't start watching until this year even though it's been on for several: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Best TV show that I watched 4 seasons worth of in a couple months: Babylon 5
Stuff
Best non-coffee product line sold by an evil, coffee empire:The Bearista stuffed bears from Starbucks. The duck bear. The skeleton bear. I have been reduced to a teary mess on more than one occasion by their cuteness. Kind of humiliating, but there ya go.Best trend in office supplies:Translucent, clear or coloured plastic so that you can see the innards of the device. I know it isn't THAT new, but more and more products are going that direction - ie. floppy discs, computers, telephones etc. See below.
Best job making me want to buy a product based soley on its looks:iMac and iBook. See above.
So, that was the way I saw 1999. If you feel like it, submit some more categories and I will rate my favorite suggestions in a later vertigoworld. TTFN.
